Al Shabaab’s Abdulkadir Commandos: another Terrorist Eliminated
25th of August 2020, it’s was the end of the road for Senior Al Shabaab military commander Abdulkadir Osman Yarow known as a Commandos “Kumaandoos” who was targeted by U.S Drone in his hideout in Habiibyaalo 40km away from Diinsoor town of Bay region Somalia, where he used to train Al Shabaab Jabha forces intended to operate inside Kenya and Ethiopia for the past decade. Abdulkadir Kumandos a former soldier/Officer in Somali Military before the collapse of Somali Centre Government in 1990’s was a very active member of radical group of Al Ittihad Al-Islami since its birth working under the leadership of its military leaders including Hassan Dahir Aweys and Abdullahi Ahmed Sahal, though he was very close ideologically to the current under house arrest radical Sheikh Aweys.
According to, several Security experts, Kumandos was the backbone of Al Shabaab military wing and he was very close friend to both Yusuf Hagi aka Moalim Daud, Mohamed Dulyadeyn, Abdukadir Ikrama and Aden Hashi Ayrow who loved him as he was mediator between the youthful Ittihad Al-Islami movement and its hardline leadership in 1990s and early 2000s, before Al Shabaab name came out. A defector from Al Shabaab who knows Commandos very well and graduated from one of his training camps in Lower Shabelle and Mogadishu told me that the deceased leader trained thousands of Al Shabaab, Raskamboni and Hisbul Islam fighters as he was one of military expertise who had vast knowledge on both traditional military doctrine and current tactical battle fields.
Yusuf Hagi aka Moalim Da’ud Sheikh Mohamed “Dulyadeyn”
Another Al Shabaab defector who called himself “Salmaan” told HACSRS “ without Abdulkadir Kumandos, Al Shabaab will never succeed their fight with Kenya, as he trained most of the Jabha and elite Jaish Aymen fighters mainly Kenyans/Somali Kenyans, who were assigned to fight against Kenyan forces in Somalia and also operations deep inside Kenya in coastal and North Eastern counties”. He was one of the main reasons Hisbul Islam group led by Hassan Dahir Aways merged with Al Shabaab as he disagreed with the group’s leadership many occasions tactically, operationally and ideologically. A few months before Al Shabaab dismantled the hardcore of Hisbul Islam’s known leadership, he felt his regrets for his unconditional push for Unity with Al Shabaab, particularly when Al Shabaab leader at that time Ahmed Abdi Godane aka Abu Zubair started to see as a golden opportunity to consolidate his power by eliminating the senior members of the merged parties beginning with his inner circle friends of Ibrahim Afghani and Moalin Burhan, followed by the escape of several top rank Somali and foreign fighters including Sheikh Aweys, Mukhtar Robow and Abu Mansur Alimriki “later killed by Alshabaab”.
Kumandos’s position within Al Shabaab was downgraded and his movements were restricted after Al Shabaab friction post power struggle within the leadership in 2014, although, the intervention of trusted members of Abu Zubair including Yusuf Hagi, Abu Ayman of Jaish Ayman and his deputy at the time Mahad Karatay requested him to soft his stand against Kumandos justifying his past actions and his military experience that still the group needs to benefit from him. Since then, Commandos who hails from UJUURAAN CLAN who have presence in both Kenya and Ethiopia returned to work again providing advice to military commanders and also participated plans and execution of several high-profile raids in Kenya.
All information currently available about Abdulkadir Commandos points out that, his last 3 years he didn’t involve major Al Shabaab operations or activities, although he was still open to meet with high ranking Al Shabaab operatives leading Military strategies of the group. According to reliable sources within Al Shabaab, Abdulkadir Commando’s targeted killing by joint Somali-U.S operation in Sakow this week might have reasons unknown to the public but his last few years he was a respected elder within Al Shabaab and former military strategist, trainer and mentor for hundreds if it’s not thousands of past & current Al Shabaab and ISIS members in Somali and East Africa Jihadist.
Asked several former Al Shabaab defectors who knew him personally about the impact of commandos’s death on Al Shabaab and its military hardware, they almost agreed “ very minimal” however, Al Shabaab might see from different angle and count him as one of their most important Military planners and strategist in their history and he might feature their next AL KATAIB propoganda Production videos.
